Details: Miriam Lapuníková, the Chief Medical Officer of the hospital in the city of Banská Bystrica, said that the operation lasted for about five hours.

„The patient’s condition has been stabilised, but it is very serious,“ she said.

Slovakia’s Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák, who joined her at the press conference, said that doctors are working to further improve Fico’s condition. The official added that more information would be officially announced during the day.

An emergency meeting of Slovakia’s Security Council and a government meeting will be held in Bratislava at 11:00 in connection with the attempted assassination of the prime minister.

Background: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is reported to have been shot after a government meeting on Wednesday.

Fico was shot on 15 May after a government meeting in the city of Handlová. Media reports indicate that Juraj Cintula, 71, was the one who carried out the assassination attempt.

The attempted assassination of Fico was condemned by Slovak politicians and world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
